Tester vs Original Perfume: What is the Difference? (UAE 2026)

By the AZ & CO teamPublished

Short answer: A genuine tester is original perfume. It is the same perfume as the boxed bottle, from the same house, but it comes in the brand's own tester box and costs less. It is new, unused and unsprayed. Buy the tester for yourself and the boxed bottle as a gift.

What is a perfume tester?

A tester is the same perfume, in the same bottle, as the boxed version. What changes is the packaging, not what is inside.

When people search "tester vs original", they usually mean the tester against the boxed retail bottle. If both are genuine, both are original. "Original" is about who made the perfume, not the box it comes in.

Tester vs boxed at a glance

Boxed Tester
The perfume Original The same original perfume
Box Full retail box The brand's own tester box
Batch code Yes Yes
Price Higher Lower. On the bottles below, AED 80 to AED 200 less
Our authenticity promise Yes Yes
Best for Gifts, and keeping the full presentation Wearing yourself

Are testers original?

Yes, a genuine tester is original perfume. The house makes it, and it carries a batch code like any other bottle. The same checks apply as for a boxed bottle, and we cover them in how to check if a perfume is original. A fake tester is still a fake, so buy from a seller who gives a written authenticity refund.

Why are testers cheaper?

A tester comes in the brand's own tester box instead of the retail box and gift presentation. The perfume inside is the same, so you are not paying less for a weaker perfume.

When to skip the tester

  • Aventus. Skip it if this is a gift, or if you have never worn Aventus. We only carry the 100ml, so there is no smaller bottle to try first. Boxed and tester prices are in our Creed Aventus guide.
  • Baccarat Rouge 540. Skip it if you want the Extrait de Parfum. That is a separate option on the same page, boxed in 70ml (AED 1,480) or as a 200ml tester (AED 2,110).
  • Layton. Skip it if 125ml is more than you need. The boxed 75ml is AED 710, less than the 125ml tester at AED 750.
  • Alexandria II. Skip it if 50ml is enough for you. The boxed 50ml is AED 720, less than the 100ml tester at AED 950.
  • 40 Knots. Skip it if 50ml is enough. The boxed 50ml is AED 540, less than the 100ml tester at AED 640.
  • Gran Ballo. Skip it if it is a present. The gap is AED 100, and a gift looks better in the full retail box.

Bottles sold only as a tester

Some listings are tester only. Their name ends in "(Tester)" and there is no boxed option on the page. One example is Santal Noir by Dior (Tester), Eau de Parfum 125ml, AED 930. The Dior collection has more.

How we picked these bottles

We counted every bottle ordered on our site in the last 180 days. Tester orders are still too few to rank by, so we do not call any of these a best seller. Instead, the picks come from what customers ask for and what is in stock. Alexandria II, 40 Knots and Gran Ballo have each been ordered from us as a tester. Aventus, Layton and Baccarat Rouge 540 are bottles UAE shoppers often search for with the word "tester" or a price. Each one had a tester and a boxed bottle in the same size, both available to order, on 11 October 2026.

Should you buy a tester or a boxed bottle?

  • Buy a tester if the perfume is for you, and you care about the scent more than the box. It is the simplest way to pay less for the same perfume.
  • Buy boxed if it is a gift, if you want the full retail box and presentation, or if you may resell or swap it later.
  • Buy a smaller boxed bottle if you are not sure about the scent yet and a smaller size exists. It can cost less than the big tester, as with Layton above.

How testers work at AZ & CO

Where we have both, the tester and the boxed bottle sit on the same product page as two options, so you can compare the prices side by side. If you choose Tester, it comes in the brand's own tester box instead of the retail box, new, unused and unsprayed.

Every bottle is checked before it ships, with its batch code left readable. If it is not genuine, we collect it free and refund every dirham. Testers are covered exactly like boxed bottles. The full detail is in our refund policy, and you can see what customers sent us after their orders arrived.

Delivery is AED 25 anywhere in the UAE: same day in Dubai and Sharjah when you order by 10 AM, otherwise next day, and one day more elsewhere. Free delivery on orders of AED 1,000 or more is automatic and works together with discount codes. You can pay by Apple Pay, Google Pay, Visa or Mastercard, or split the price into 4 with Tabby.

Questions about testers

Does a perfume tester come with a cap?

It depends on the brand. If the cap matters to you, choose the boxed bottle, which comes with one.

Is a tester weaker than the boxed bottle?

No. A tester is the same perfume at the same concentration as the boxed bottle it matches, for example Eau de Parfum. The product page shows the concentration and size of each option.

Is a tester older than a boxed bottle?

Not necessarily. Its age depends on its batch, the same as a boxed bottle. We leave the batch code readable, and sites such as CheckFresh read the production date from the batch code for many houses, including Creed, Xerjoff, Parfums de Marly and Maison Francis Kurkdjian.

Can I return a tester?

Testers follow the same refund policy as boxed bottles. If it is not genuine, we collect it free and refund every dirham. If it arrives damaged or is the wrong bottle, message us within 48 hours of delivery with a photo, and we replace it or refund it in full. We do not take returns for a change of mind, opened or unopened, so if you are unsure about a scent, message us before you order.

Can I give a tester as a gift?

You can, but the boxed bottle is the safer choice for a gift. A tester comes in the brand's own tester box, not the retail box, so it looks less like a present. For yourself, the tester gets you the same perfume for less.
